The Maars of the Vulkaneifel are often called the "Eyes of the Eifel" (Augen der Eifel). When seen from above, these circular, water-filled craters resemble dark blue eyes looking up from the forested landscape—a calm reminder of the region's volcanic past.

"Eyes" to explore nearby:

  • The Three Daun Maars: A classic trail connects the Schalkenmehrener, Weinfelder, and Gemündener Maar. They lie close together, yet each has a distinct character.

  • Weinfelder Maar: Often considered the most atmospheric "eye," surrounded by a protected nature reserve and a historic church on its rim.

  • The Crater Rims: The hiking paths follow the high ridges, providing viewpoints directly looking down into the deep, still water.

Right from our front door, you can hike straight to the Meerfelder Maar (7,3km), the largest volcanic crater basin in the Eifel. It offers a peaceful trail along the water, surrounded by steep slopes and unique flora. 🥾
